FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a global STEM program for kids (ages ~4–16, depending on division) that uses LEGO robotics to teach engineering, coding, teamwork, and problem-solving—while connecting those skills to real-world challenges.

How it works

Each season, teams:

  1. Build & program a LEGO robot to complete missions on a themed game field

  2. Research a real-world problem tied to that year’s theme

  3. Design an innovative solution (the Innovation Project)

  4. Present to judges and demonstrate teamwork and core values

The three FLL divisions

  • FLL Discover (ages ~4–6): playful STEM exploration with LEGO

  • FLL Explore (ages ~6–10): models + storytelling around a theme

  • FLL Challenge (ages ~9–16): full robot games, coding, research, and judging

Why it matters

FLL isn’t just about robots. Students learn to:

  • Work like engineers and researchers

  • Interview real experts

  • Use the engineering design process

  • Communicate ideas clearly

  • Collaborate under pressure

For teams like Lego Legendz, FLL Challenge becomes a launchpad into high school robotics, STEM careers, and real confidence.

  • Robot Design & Programming – how the robot is built, coded, and improved

  • Robot Game – how many missions the robot completes on the field

  • Innovation Project – research quality, real expert input, and solution impact

  • Core Values – teamwork, inclusion, discovery, and Gracious Professionalism®
